Ionian - I

Dorian - Don't

Phrygian - Play

Lydian - Like

Mixolydian - My

Aeolian - Aunt

Locrian - Liberace 

 

Ionian - major scale

Dorian - major scale, flat 3rd and 7th

Phrygian - major scale, flat 2, 3, 6, 7, OR down a major third, use that key (C-C in key of A flat) (OR natural minor scale with 2nd lowered a half step)

Lydian - major scale, sharp 4

Mixolydian - major scale, flat 7

Aeolian - major scale, flat 3, 6, 7; "1-2-flat-3 use that key" (natural minor scale)

Locrian - major scale, go up half-step, use that key

Scale Degrees

1. Tonic

2. Supertonic

3. Mediant

4. Subdominant

5. Dominant

6. Submediant

7. Leading tone

Major Scale: W-W-H-W-W-W-H

Minor Scale: W-H-W-W-H-W-W

Harmonic minor raises 7th by half step

Melodic minor raises 6th and 7th as it ascends and lowers them as they descend

Pentatonic Scale - 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 (5 notes)

 

Whole Tone Scale - Can only have 2 patterns, goes up by whole steps
